Goodbye Typo, Hello Mephisto!

December 10th, 2006

For the past couple of weeks, my blog has been dead. I’m sure a number of you got curious why the RSS feed wasn’t updating and ventured to http://blog.bleything.net, only to find that I had left a bitchy message about how Typo was screwed up.

Well, those sentiments still apply, but I’m back in the blogging business. Today I finally migrated my blog to Mephisto. There are still some outstanding issues (permalinks, sections, etc) but for the moment, I’m rolling again.

I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that you really ought to be reading my blog via the FeedBurner feed, which you can snag here. As soon as I get a little more comfortable with Mephisto and get a style worked out, I’ll be removing references to the built-in RSS feeds in favor of that… so switch now or I’ll force you to later ;)

I’ve got some news and some code to post, but it’ll have to wait for tomorrow. Cheers!

Looks like you’re settled in, so this may be too late but:

I thought my choices were Typo or Mephisto if I wanted a Rails blog. Personally I hate Liquid templates so Mephisto had little to offer me over Typo except it’s own special brand of frustration.

Fortunately I discovered a third Rails option, SimpleLog. I like the admin interface about as much as Typo (which is to say a lot more than Mephisto), but the promise of greater stability, simplicity, and speed is there…

To be honest I don’t see that there’s any major speed differences between any of ‘em. I just know Typo crashed if it got too many hits. At least the SimpleLog code is… well, simple. So hopefully wringing the performance I want out of it won’t be too difficult, and despite that I never see it mentioned, it has a much nicer “out of box” experience than Mephisto.

Oh, and besides just having setup a SimpleLog instance, I’m of course in no way affiliated with it. I just realized my comment sounds a bit like a sales pitch. ;-)

Thanks for the info! I had some awareness of SimpleLog buried in my brain, but it didn’t even occur to me when my Typo finally gave out.

The thing that got me to switch (rather than try to fix typo) was Mephisto’s importer. I’m not a prolific blogger by any means, but with just over 100 entries and hundreds of comments, I wasn’t about to do the migration by hand.

I may be setting up a blog for another purpose soon, I’ll check out SimpleLog for that.

So what is your experience with Mephisto so far? Can it compete with Wordpress and the big guys?

  7. Ben Bleything Says:

jj: it’s pretty good! I’ve only ever used MovableType, Typo, and Mephisto, so I’m not that qualified to talk about its strengths and weaknesses compared to others.

I will say that Mephisto does a lot of things that I like, and is generally simple to run. I don’t have any trouble altering its behavior, which is nice (and very much _un_like MT).

If you’re looking for a competitor, I’d suggest you try them all.
